CYNTHIA BROWN
CYNTHIA BROWN is a fine arts painter balancing her time and artistic efforts between New York City and the coast of Maine. No matter where she finds herself the practice of daily sketching continues. These sketches are independent works or developed as foundational compositions for future paintings.
Cynthia attended her first drawing class at the Cleveland Museum of Art at age seven; however her professional debut into the arts was as a performer. After receiving her BFA from Ohio University she had the opportunity to travel throughout the United States and Europe with regional theatres and touring productions.
Lured by the prospect of continuing her theatrical studies with Uta Hagen, Ms. Brown settled in New York City. She also resumed her studies of the fine arts beginning with a life drawing class taught by Marshal Glazier at the Art Students League. By 1990, during a trip to Paris, France she came full-circle and decided to devote herself full-time to painting. Returning again to New York City she studied with Morton Kaish at the Fashion Institute of Technology and Dominick Guida, an artist in oils and watercolor. She also attended drawing classes at The Art Students Leaugue. Cynthia continues to paint all along the eastern seaboard and freely admits that her travels have influenced her work. A particular trip to Florence, Italy had an enormous impact on her work that continues today. However, the most dramatic influence on Ms. Brown’s artistic pursuit was the initial inspiration given by her sister Virginia Brown Yazbeck, an artist of extraordinary creativity.
Ms. Brown always keeps a sketchbook at hand. The subject matter of her work reflects an interest in day-to-day activities and what she considers "the astonishing beauty and curiosity" of one's immediate surroundings. Landscapes, cityscapes, sunlit tables, and open doors in a hallway are extrapolated and interpreted.
Her award-winning work is represented in the corporate collections of Bloomingdales; Peter Luger’s in New York City; Rohleder GmbH in Germany; Heberlein Textildruck in Switzerland; and The Buenos Aires Trust Company, as well as in private collections in the United States, Europe, Japan, and South America.
